Team Members
Jaklyn Brookman, MFT, is the
founder and primary author of the website
www.supportfornurses.com.
The website is a source of information for both new and
experienced, domestic and foreign-born nurses interested in developing
effective work habits. The site features numerous articles of
interest to nurses.
For the past decade, Ms. Brookman has worked with
thousands of nurses throughout California as a team development
consultant and trainer at Kaiser Permanente. The training she
facilitated addressed critical thinking, precepting skills, cultural
competency, assertive communication, team building, conflict resolution,
navigating change and handling emotions under pressure.
Ms. Brookman received a Master
of Arts in Psychology from New College of California, San Francisco and
is a licensed psychotherapist. She is the author
of numerous articles and developed several training curriculums. She
also worked as a consultant for AIDS related causes in several African
countries. Jaklyn Brookman is part of our cultural training team for
foreign-born nurses.
Dr. Bernard Ben Buecker
is
an attorney in San Antonio, Texas who engages in the practice of
law involving civil litigation, and representation of business
entities in contract and employment law, and negotiation of
business interests between Germany and United States entities.
In 2000 he was named Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of
Germany and he acts as trust attorney for the German Consulate
General in Houston. He previously worked as an attorney at
the law firm of Walter Schuermann & Partners in Frankfurt/Main.
Mr. Buecker studied as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of
Heidelberg and received his law degree from the University of
Texas at Austin. Ben Buecker received the Distinguished
Service Cross of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1988 and the
German American Friendship Award in 1986. He has
co-authored a book titled 'Key Aspects of German Business Law'.
Mr. Buecker speaks fluent German. He handles all aspects
of US employment law for European Medical Staffing.
Yvonne Ford
founded
the Centre for Communication in Health Care in Frankfurt, Germany in
1984 and continues to offer medical English
language training for health care professionals in Europe.
Originally from North Carolina, Ms. Ford has taught English in
Frankfurt since 1979. She received a Bachelor’s degree in
Education, English and French from
Winthrop
College in South Carolina. Her
training in teaching English for speakers of other languages (TESOL) was
conducted in England at the Sheffield-Hallam University and Trinity
College in London, England.
Over the years she has worked with countless nurses and
doctors who went on to work in many different countries around the
world. Yvonne Ford
is an adjunct lecturer in English at the Private University
Witten/ Herdecke and at the University of Applied Sciences in Frankfurt.
She has written two English language books for doctors and nurses
and writes a regular column on nursing English for a German nursing
magazine. Yvonne Ford also teaches a seminar on
'culture-sensitive communication' in health care and works as a coach for
nurses and other professionals who work in health care and social
institutions. Yvonne Ford manages our English language training programs
in Europe.
Marlene V. Obermeyer, RN, MA, is a Registered Nurse and cultural
competency specialist with over 20 years experience in direct
patient care. Ms.
Obermeyer's nursing experience includes positions as a staff nurse
and charge nurse in medical-surgical, cardiovascular, intensive
care, bone-marrow transplant, spinal cord injury, rehabilitation,
geriatric and psychiatric units in rural, inner-city and
metropolitan medical facilities.
Originally from the Philippines,
she is a survivor of the "culture shock" and cross-cultural
communication challenges. Her Master of Arts degree in Liberal
Studies combines concentrations in anthropology, communication and
international business. She holds certifications in
cross-cultural training for international corporations and training
for cultural transitions.
Ms. Obermeyer is a curriculum
developer for continuing education courses for the Kansas State
Board of Nursing and a university guest lecturer in Intercultural
Relations.
Marlene has worked with other international nurses from the
Philippines, India, Taiwan, Nigeria, Australia, and other
countries, throughout her twenty years of experience in the
United States health care setting. She has taught
cultural competency for nurses in the last three years and
most recently completed cultural training for international
school teachers in the US. Ms. Obermeyer manages our
cultural training programs.
Thomas A. Simon
is the president and founder of
European Medical Staffing. He has worked as a
management consultant in Austin, Texas in a variety of
industries over the past 15 years. He has been
involved in several of successful business start-ups.
Originally from Germany, he has lived in the United States
for almost 20 years and also lived and traveled extensively
in Europe, West Africa and Mexico. He has spent the
last two years focused extensively on the US health care
industry and international nurse recruiting and is familiar
with the challenges of managing and integrating different
cultures into an organization. Mr. Simon graduated
from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of
Business.
