Program Overview

Our program is divided into 4 steps designed to help you understand and manage the entire process to work as an international nurse in the United States.

Step 1: Provide you with Information

Before you decide if working in the United States as a nurse is the right career move for you we will provide you with as much information as possible so you can make an educated and informed decision.

We want you to understand the entire process from start to end.  We also want you to understand what we can and what we can not do for you.  We want you to understand how long the process could take and how much it will cost.  We want you to understand the immigration process and the situation in regards to visas.

Step 2: Help with obtaining the necessary credentials

One you have decided that you want to work as a nurse in the United States we will help you to obtain the necessary documents to work in the US.  Following is a brief overview of the process to obtain the required credentials to be able to work as a nurse in the US.

We recommend that you initially obtain a nursing license in the state of Texas.  If you have a nursing license in Texas you can obtain a nursing license by endorsement in several other states.

The first step is to evaluate your foreign nursing degree to determine if it is equivalent to a degree obtained in the United States.  In most states (including the State of Texas), this will be done by an organization called Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS).  This process will take 6 to 8 weeks.  One exception is the state of California which evaluates foreign nursing degrees themselves.

The results of this evaluation will be sent to a state nursing board of your choice.  Based on these results, the board will decide if your degree is equivalent to the US nursing degree.

If it is, you can obtain a state nursing license and apply to take the NCLEX®-RN Examination.  This is a comprehensive exam to test your knowledge of nursing.  The same test has to be taken by all US nurses as well.

If you pass this exam and pass a criminal background check, you will be issued a state nursing license.  This process should take 5 to 6 weeks.

If you have received your nursing education in a language other than English you need to show your proficiency of the English language.

Beyond receiving a passing score on the required exam you need to be realistic about your skills to effectively communicate in English verbally and in writing.  Proper command of the English language is essential to be hired by a US health care provider.

The last part of the credentialing process is to obtain what is called a VisaScreen™ certificate.  This will take 7 to 9 weeks.

Step 3: Finding employment and obtaining a visa

Once you have obtained the state nursing license and you are in the process to get your VisaScreen™ certificate we can send your credentials to our partner hospital in the United States.  As part of the process to match you with the best facility you will be invited to visit the hospitals (depending on visa availability).

How fast you can start to work at a US hospital will depend on the availability of work or immigrant visas.

Step 4: Integration into the US Health Care System

Once you have arrived at the US hospital to begin your employment the acculturation program as well as clinical training in the facility will start.

This entire process will take up to a year during which we will continuously monitor your progress.  The goal is to enable you to work as soon as possible independently as an international nurse so you can continue to advance as a health care professional in the US health care system.

We have cross-culturally trained local support staff in all communities to offer you an unprecedented level of support.  We understand what it means to move from one country to another and our staff will work with you to ensure a smooth transition.

When you first arrive to work as a nurse in the United States will will also help you get settled in by assisting with obtaining a social security number and drivers license, finding housing, getting utility (water, electricity, gas) service, opening a bank account, buying a car, getting car insurance etc.  We want to you to be able to fully concentrate on your work as a nurse in your new place of work.
