Program Overview
Our program
is divided into 4 steps designed to help you understand and manage the
entire process to work as an international nurse in the United States.
Step 1: Provide you with Information
Before you
decide if working in the United States as a nurse is the right career
move for you we will provide you with as much information as possible so
you can make an educated and informed decision.
We want you
to understand the entire process from start to end. We also want
you to understand what we can and what we can not do for you. We
want you to understand how long the process could take and how much it
will cost. We want you to understand the immigration process and
the situation in regards to visas.
Step 2: Help with obtaining the necessary credentials
Once you
have decided that you want to work as a nurse in the United States we
will help you to obtain the necessary documents to work in the US.
Following is a brief overview of the process to obtain
the required credentials to be able to work as a nurse in the US.
We recommend
that you initially obtain a nursing license in the state of
Texas. If you
have a nursing license in Texas you can obtain a nursing license
by endorsement in several other states.
The first step is to
evaluate your foreign
nursing degree
to determine if it is equivalent to a degree obtained in
the United States. In most states (including the
State of Texas), this will be done by an organization
called CGFNS International. This process will take
6 to 8 weeks. One exception is the state of
California which evaluates foreign nursing degrees
themselves.
The results of this evaluation
will be sent to a state nursing board of your choice.
Based on these results, the board will decide if your degree is
equivalent to the US nursing degree.
If it is, you can apply for a
state nursing license
and take the
NCLEX®-RN exam.
This is a comprehensive exam to test your knowledge of
nursing. The same test has to be taken by all US
nurses.
If you pass the
NCLEX®-RN exam
and
a criminal background
check, you will be issued a
state
nursing license in Texas.
This process should take 5
to 6 weeks.
If you have received your nursing education in a
language other than English you need to take an
English test before you
can apply for the nursing license.
Beyond receiving a passing score on the required exam
you need to be realistic about your skills to
effectively communicate in English verbally and in
writing. Proper command of the English language is
essential to be hired by a US health care provider.
The
last part of the credentialing process is to obtain what is called a
VisaScreen™ certificate.
This will take 7 to 9 weeks.
The table
below gives you an overview of the time and expenses to obtain the
necessary credentials which we explain in detail in this part of our
website. Please keep in mind that hospitals will only recruit
nurses if applicable visas are available.

on the availability of work or immigrant visas.

international nurses can be found
here.
Step 4: Integration into the US Health Care System
Even
before you arrive in the United States you can take
steps to prepare for your journey into the US healthcare
system.
|
We
have teamed with the
Continuing
Education department at
Austin Community College to offer various courses to
international nurses which will help them prepare for
nursing practice in the United States.

Once you have arrived
at the US hospital to begin your employment the clinical training in the facility will start.
This entire process will take
up to a year during which the hospital will continuously monitor your progress.
The goal is to enable you to work as soon as possible
independently as an international nurse so you can continue to
advance as a health care professional in the US health care
system.
When
you first arrive to work as a nurse in the United States will
will also help you get settled in by assisting with obtaining a
social security number and drivers license, finding housing,
getting utility (water, electricity, gas) service, opening a
bank account, buying a car, getting car insurance etc. We
want to you to be able to fully concentrate on your work as a nurse in
