Medical English
Based on our
substantial experience in working with health care professionals
from many different countries who want to relocate to the United
States,
we understand the
importance of not only speaking English as a language fluently but
also the need to have a strong knowledge of Nursing or Medical
English.

We
have teamed with the
Continuing
Education department at
Austin Community College to offer various courses to
international nurses which will help them prepare for
nursing practice in the United States.

One of these
courses, Essentials of Medical Terminology, teaches international
nurses the
word origin and structure through the
introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations
and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties, and diagnostic
procedures.

For nurses who live in Europe, we have teamed with the Centre for Communication in
Health Care in Frankfurt, Germany to offer language
courses specifically designed for nurses who want to
relocate to the United States.
Ms. Yvonne
Ford founded this organization in 1984
with the
aim of filling
a void in the educational offerings in Europe. Originally from
the United States, Ms. Ford has taught English in Frankfurt since
1979. Today, she also teaches at several universities
and hospitals in Germany. The Centre for Communication in
Health Care offers many different courses for medical professionals.
In
addition to courses, it is possible to arrange telephone lessons, to
get help with writing a resume (CV), and to prepare for an
interview. |
|
Ms. Ford
has recently published the second edition of her book titled 'Nursing
English Essentials'. The book covers medical terms and
expressions divided into various subjects such a emergency room,
women's health and caring for older people. It also includes
information on writing a resume for those seeking employment outside
of Germany. An audio CD is also available to help with
pronunciation. We highly recommend the book to anyone
interested to work as a healthcare worker in an English speaking
country.
The
book and audio CD are available or can be ordered at any
bookstore in Germany and it will soon be available from
amazon.de (€
29.95/book, € 19.95/audio CD):

Yvonne Ford also offers an
English course designed
specifically
for nurses and other health care workers.
Communication with Patients in Hospitals
This five-day intensive course teaches
vocabulary that patients use to describe their bodies, body
functions and symptoms. Nurses learn how to talk
with patients to complete an assessment, how to discuss care goals with the patient and family, and how to
explain hospital routine and nursing procedures. The course has a special focus on pronunciation and speaking clearly.
All participants receive a certificate of
participation at the end of the course.
